Alan Rickman in Sense & Sensibility* |
Alan Rickman: One of the Best Actors of His Generation
I am quite shocked and saddened to hear of Alan Rickman's passing today. An incredibly talented actor, he always delivered an amazing performance in any film.
He is most famous for his role as Severus Snape in Harry Potter. I remember reading at one time that author J.K.Rowling was so entranced by his performance in the first movie that she started writing lines for the character Snape for the joy of imagining Alan Rickman deliver them. She also told him, in confidence, what would happen in the series so that that he could portray Snape properly.
Some of my favorite Rickman roles to watch in movies include Colonel Brandon in Sense & Sensibility, Alexander Dane in the hilarious Galaxy Quest (a comic send-up of Star Trek fandom), the chilling terrorist mastermind Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard movie. He could add fun to any movie, no matter how plodding, as he did with his deadpan delivery of very funny lines as Sheriff George of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. ("That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas!")
There are some Alan Rickman movies that are still on my to-watch list: Perfume (based on the book by Patrick Suskind), Bottle Shock, Quigley Down Under, and a Song of Lunch.
Thank you for all the wonderful moments on screen, Alan. You will be missed but never forgotten.
